We are delighted to invite submissions of writing and graphic art for Songs of the Wild Geese, a new ongoing section of Cha: An Asian Literary Journal devoted to work emerging from the intersections of Hong Kong and Canada.

The section takes its name from the image of the wild goose, which carries different but suggestive resonances across the literary and cultural landscapes of these two places. In classical Chinese poetry, wild geese often evoke distance, separation, seasonal passage, exile, longing, and communication across great distances. In a poem by Li Bai, geese appear as creatures capable of carrying sorrow away. In Canada, the familiar passage of migrating geese offers another image of movement and return, of adaptation, collective flight, and lives shaped by more than one landscape.

We welcome work that approaches Hong Kong and Canada from unexpected directions. This might include writing and art concerned with migration, diaspora, return, distance, language, family, memory, citizenship, landscape, history, food, work, intimacy, or cultural inheritance. With Songs of the Wild Geese, we hope to create a space in which diasporic and homeland perspectives can enter into conversation without being required to resolve their differences.
