Cha welcomes submissions of original essays and translations for publication. We are interested in intellectually rigorous, well-crafted nonfiction that engages with literature, film, art and culture, as well as writing that reflects on living in Asia and on Asian experiences in the broadest sense. We also welcome high-quality translations that bring Asian writing, ideas and voices to an English-language readership.

We particularly encourage work that combines critical inquiry with personal insight. Suitable submissions include literary and cultural criticism, reflective essays, memoir pieces and hybrid forms that move thoughtfully between analysis and lived experience. Memoir submissions should situate personal narrative within wider cultural, historical or social contexts rather than focusing on autobiography alone.

Translations may include essays, literary nonfiction or other prose forms relevant to Cha’s editorial scope. Submissions should be accompanied by a brief translator’s note outlining the original context, language and publication status of the source text, as well as confirmation that translation rights have been secured.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, close readings of books, films and artworks; reflections on living in Asian cities or regions; observations of ordinary and overlooked aspects of Asian life; meditations on language, translation and education; explorations of identity, migration and belonging; and essays that consider how Asian philosophies, mythologies or everyday customs shape contemporary experience. Essays and translations may engage with social or political questions, provided the emphasis remains on interpretation, cultural meaning and reflective critique.

There is no fixed word limit. We prefer pieces that are at least 800 words and as long as the author or translator sees fit, provided the length is justified by the substance and structure of the work.

• Submissions must be written in English and previously unpublished.
• Translations must be accompanied by a translator’s note and rights information.
• Submissions should be sent as a Microsoft Word document.

• Accepted writers and translators will be notified within two weeks of submission.

Cha welcomes submissions from both emerging and established writers and translators. We seek work that expands conversations about Asia through attentive observation, critical intelligence and a distinctive voice.
